I had a problem recently where a client needed to update their DNS settings so that they could get an external mail server working with their hosting account. This shouldn’t be a problem. All you need to do is set up the MX record to point to mail.domain.com and set up mail.domian.com to point to the Exchange server that they have in their office. This simple idea came unstuck when they couldn’t add in the A record for the mail server.
For some reason, their icon for the ‘Advanced DNS Zome Editor’ was hidden in their CPanel screen. I did all the right things to get it working. I set up the ‘Feature List’ for this, set up the hosting account to use this feature list and did a log out and back in for everything, but I couldn’t see that icon anywhere.
It took some digging around to find out, and it was not something that I expected. It turns out that because the client had decided to use the RVSkin theme for their CPanel section, there was a problem. It’s apparently a “known issue” where the RVSkin theme doesn’t display this icon, even if the feature is enabled.
So how did I get around this? It was quite easy. All that you need to do is swap the theme back to the standard X3 theme, and the icon shows up. This is a simple thing to do, but it’s a hard thing to diagnose.
